Clive - Off-Broadway

Ethan Hawke stars in Jonathan Marc Sherman's new play.

What Is the Story of Clive?
Based on Bertolt Brecht’s controversial play Baal, Clive tells the story of an aging rocker who struggles to connect with a whirlwind of friends and lovers while his music career declines and his drug addiction intensifies. As his self-destructive personality takes over, the things that once made Clive happy (drugs, sex and fame) come back to haunt him.

What Is Clive Like?
Directed by Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, written by Jonathan Marc Sherman and starring them both (in addition to Vincent D’Onofrio, Zoe Kazan and more), Clive is a 90-minute retelling of Brecht’s first 1923 play. Featuring a collection of traditional and unlikely instruments, the ensemble cast sings and plays a variety of classic American songs. Clive is an abstract story told in “21 shards,” featuring a dizzying array of record producers, friends, girlfriends and one-night-stands that enter and exit the title character's life.
