The classic musical returns to New York at Harlem's Apollo Theatre.
It was a blustery morning—the kind that makes one want to roll over and go back to sleep. But for nearly 500 stage hopefuls, there was only one place to be: the legendary Apollo Theatre on 125th Street in Harlem. With a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to headline the cast of the upcoming national tour of Dreamgirls, would-be performers queued up outside the landmark venue. The Apollo is steeped in history: Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill and countless others began their road to stardom on its stage. The first scene in Dreamgirls takes place on the Apollo stage, so it's fitting that the tour will launch at the theater in early 2009. Here's an intimate look at what the next Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White went through to get their parts. May all their Dreams come true!
