Story

What Is the Story of Hedwig and the Angry Inch?
Hedwig centers on an East German transsexual, “a slip of a girlyboy,” who moves to America after a botched sex change operation. As the show begins, Hedwig is performing in concert and recounting her life story: childhood abuse, a disastrous marriage to an American soldier and, after being plunked down alone in Kansas, a doomed romantic and songwriting partnership with a Christian teen who becomes a rock star. Hedwig remains obsessed with this former love, Tommy Gnosis, and follows him on the road, accompanied by her loyal new husband, Yitzhak. By the end, our heroine embraces the fullness of her identity in one of the most electrifying scenes on Broadway.

Should I See It?

What Is Hedwig and the Angry Inch Like?
On one level, Hedwig is an exciting rock concert powered by the charisma and sly humor of the glamorously bewigged, high-heeled title character. Songs like “The Origin of Love” are both gorgeous and thought-provoking, performed by Hedwig and a four-man band (The Angry Inch) and backed by the powerful vocals of Yitzhak, a role played by a woman. Beneath the laughs is the moving story of a heroine desperate to find love and a sense of self-worth. John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s groundbreaking 1998 off-Broadway musical has bloomed into a long-running Broadway hit.

Is Hedwig and the Angry Inch Good for Kids?
Nope. The gender-bending storyline and references to Hedwig’s “angry inch” will confuse kids, and there’s plenty of rough language and sexual innuendo. The show is for mature audiences only.
