Few plays have the ability to create conflicting—and conflicted—sympathies like Paula Vogel’s coming of age drama How I Learned to Drive. The Pulitzer Prize winner is back on the New York stage for the first time in 15 years, starring Elizabeth Reaser as Li’l Bit and Norbert Leo Butz as her Uncle Peck. Growing up in rural Maryland, Li’l Bit’s only real connection is with her uncle, a troubled veteran who seems to be the only adult in her life willing to listen. As he teaches her to drive, their relationship grows progressively darker and more co-dependent. Broadway.com headed to off-Broadway’s Second Stage Theatre to chat with the stars, Vogel and director Kate Whoriskey about this complicated piece.
