Story

What Is the Story of Lucky Guy?
Lucky Guy is a dramatic retelling of the career of famed New York tabloid columnist Mike McAlary, who rose to newspaper stardom in the late '80s and early '90s with a series of high-profile cases and investigative reporting. The show charts the development of McAlary’s Pulitzer Prize-winning career, as well as the evolution of his marriage, family and health. (He died of colon cancer at age 41 in 1998.)

Should I See It?

What Is Lucky Guy Like?
Nora Ephron's final play features two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks in a Broadway debut as tabloid journalist Mike McAlary. From the opening moments he and the rest of the Lucky Guy cast alternate between playing scenes with one another and directly addressing the audience (“breaking the fourth wall,” in theater talk) as they narrate the story of McAlary's life and career in the rough-and-tumble 1980s. Much of the show is told via narration and through the clever use of projections. Delivering plenty of laughs and tears throughout, Lucky Guy is a fast-talking drama that packs a powerful emotional punch.

Is Lucky Guy Good for Kids?
No. Lucky Guy features adult language, onstage smoking and adult themes including rape and death.
