The tour will kick off in (where else?) Memphis!

Memphis is heading to Memphis! A national tour of the hit Broadway musical, which was chosen as one of the Best Shows of 2009 by Broadway.com, will kick off at the Orpheum Theatre in the show’s namesake Tennessee city in October 2011. Additional tour stops, dates and casting will be announced at a later time.

“Since the first announcement of the Broadway production, the entire city of Memphis, from its city officials to its citizens, has shown us overwhelming support and enthusiasm,” said show producer Sue Frost. “We couldn’t be more excited to be kicking off the tour with our friends at the Orpheum.”

Memphis, which opened at the Shubert Theatre on October 19, 2009, takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the musically-rich town in the segregated 1950s. The fictional story follows young white DJ Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) as he falls in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer named Felicia Farrell (Montego Glover). Memphis is an original musical about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision meets her voice, and the music changed forever.

Directed by Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo, Memphis features a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music by David Bryan, a founding member of the rock band Bon Jovi.
