Mrs. Warren's Profession - Broadway

Cherry Jones stars in George Bernard Shaw's classic.

Story

What Is the Story of Mrs. Warren’s Profession?
The central question in Mrs. Warren’s Profession is just what her profession is and how it affects the life of her daughter, Vivie—especially once Vivie learns the truth. Vivie, who barely knows her mother, Kitty, is a Cambridge-educated, independent, young woman. When Kitty waltzes back into her life, Vivie finds out that the money that has afforded her the life of a respectable woman has not come from a respectable business. The profits have given her every advantage in life, but Vivie doesn’t know if she can forgive her mother for the choices she’s made, or if two women brought up so differently can ever really get along with one another, even though they are family.

Should I See It?

What Is Mrs. Warren’s Profession Like?
Mrs. Warren’s Profession offers dry observations, an engrossing struggle between ideals and reality and a charming English countryside setting. Even though it was written in 1893, this quick-moving work feels relevant today. After all, conflicts between mothers and daughters are ageless—and so are questions of morality.

Is Mrs. Warren’s Profession Good For Kids?
Scandalous in its day, the subject matter of this play would not make anyone who gets basic cable blush today. Though the heart of the matter is indeed Mrs. Warren’s profession—that is to say, the oldest profession—in true Shaw style the word itself is never used. Younger kids may squirm at the length and density of the language, but it would be perfectly suitable for high-schoolers.
