The classic play is born anew in a visionary production.
“This play is called Our Town. It was written by Thornton Wilder.” So goes the comforting first lines of what may be America’s best known drama. Now Wilder’s beloved classic is being mounted off-Broadway for the first time in 50 years. Super-hot Chicago director David Cromer is bringing his acclaimed production (in which he moonlights as the Stage Manager!) to the Barrow Street Theatre, which has been stripped and reconfigured so the audience—and the play’s 18 cast members—surrounds the action. The actors and creative team gathered at the theater on February 10 for a meet-and-greet, and Broadway.com headed downtown to say hello to the Gibbses, the Webbs, and the rest of the folks from Grover’s Corners.
