Classic Stage Company presents a revival of Stephen Sondheim and Jame Lapine's Tony-winning musical.

Story

What Is the Story of Passion?
Passion is Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical of romantic obsession. Based on the Italian movie Passione d’amore, Passion is the story of Giorgio, a soldier, and Clara, a woman with a husband and child, who are deeply in love, but their sublime happiness is disrupted when Giorgio is transferred to an isolated outpost. Here he meets Fosca, a homely and ill woman who is the cousin of the regiment’s commanding officer. Fosca soon falls in love with Giorgio and pursues him relentlessly. The original Broadway production, directed by Lapine, opened in May 1994 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

What Is Passion Like?
Passion is a Sondheim classic that deals with the many intricacies of love, from unrequited to obsessive to unconditional. Love letters feature prominently in the musical, which is set in 1863 Italy. With lyrics like “Love that shuts away the world / that envelopes my soul / that ennobles my life/ love that floods every living moment,” it’s a complicated story that will certainly arouse a debate. If you’re a fan of majestic, moving music and honest, provocative words, then Classic Stage Company’s revival of Passion, staged in its intimate off-Broadway house with a cast led by Broadway veterans Judy Kuhn, Melissa Errico and Ryan Silverman, is a perfect choice.

Is Passion For Kids?
Passion opens with a simulated sex scene. The production contains adult themes and situations that might be inappropriate and/or uninteresting for young children. The production may be a good choice for older, mature teens.
