New Musical Saved Makes a Heavenly Debut Off-Broadway

A very different sort of high school musical opened June 3 at Playwrights Horizons Mainstage Theater as tongue-in-cheek Christian-themed tuner Saved made its big debut. Based on the 2004 film of the same name (which starred Mandy Moore, Mary-Louise Parker and Macaulay Culkin), the stage version Saved follows one very confused good girl (Celia Keenan-Bolger), her even more perplexed boyfriend (Aaron Tveit) and even The Good Lord himself as social and ethical chaos break out at a small Christian high school. The colorful production, which also features Broadway veterans Mary Faber and Julia Murney, was met with divine applause as a supportive audience blessed the cast and crew just in time for their spirited post-show celebration at The West Bank Cafe.
