Film veteran and dyed-in-the-wool New Yorker Danny Aiello has taken his Oscar-nominated talents off-Broadway, where he is tackling the demanding title role in Susan Charlotte’s The Shoemaker. On a devastating day in American history, this aging cobbler retreats into his shop in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, looking for a haven from the horrific events outside. Instead, he is forced to confront his uncertain present and future, along with his own history as an Italian Jew who escaped Europe in the grip of World War II.
