The most beloved swamp-dwelling ogre of all time makes his Broadway debut.
What do an ornery ogre, a wise-cracking donkey, a singing princess and a rabid pack of musical theater fans all have in common? All were packed into Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre on September 10 as new DreamWorks musical Shrek took to the stage for its big, out-of-town opening. The musical adaptation of the animated film (and children's book) has been generating plenty of buzz lately, and with big Broadway names like Brian d'Arcy James, Sutton Foster and Chester Gregory II bringing the classic movie roles to life, you'd better believe we were anxious to see what all the fuss was about. We trekked cross-country to take in all the action, which is heading to Broadway's aptly named Broadway Theatre to being previews November 14. So, how was the whimsical, fantasmical new musical?
