What Is the Story of Slowgirl?
Becky is in serious trouble with the law after a high school party got out of hand. No one could have expected that a mentally handicapped student referred to by her classmates as “slowgirl” would get drunk and think she can fly, but she did, and if she dies, Becky will pay a steep price. While Becky waits to hear about her classmate's fate, she escapes to her Uncle Sterling's cabin in Costa Rica to clear her mind. During her weeklong stay, the two bond over the morally questionable decisions they have made.
What Is Slowgirl Like?
This two-person, 90-minute play examines the relationship between an uncle and his niece in four scenes spread over the course of six days in Central America. Though the play is mostly a comedy, there are moments of moving drama beautifully acted by Emmy winner Željko Ivanek and Sarah Steele. The play is performed in Lincoln Center’s intimate new rooftop theater, and Rachel Hauck’s detailed set immediately invites you into the world of these two lost characters.
Is Slowgirl Good for Kids?
This show is great for teens navigating the world of high school bullying, but adult language, drug use and teenage drinking may make it unsuitable for very young audiences.
