Hank (True Blood's Chris Bauer) is a recently divorced dad. Because of the messy way his marriage ended, he must begin from square one with his rapidly maturing teenage daughter Marlene (Level Up's Aimee Carrero). At work Chris finds a friend in the hilarious and unpredictable Sheryl (Tony nominee Da'Vine Joy Randolph) and thanks to a chance meeting, he becomes involved with the seriously complicated but loveable Lydia (Seana Kofoed). What Rhymes with America examines how Hank adjusts to his new life and juggles relationship with three very different women.
What Is What Rhymes with America Like?
Written by Melissa James Gibson, this one-act dramedy mixes big laughs with moving and heartbreaking moments. The show takes place over 90 minutes and in a variety of different settings at which the character Hank interacts with the women in his life. Daniel Aukin's inventive direction keeps audiences engaged, and the four-person ensemble, led by Chris Bauer and featuring Tony nominee Da'Vine Joy Randolph, is perfection.
Is What Rhymes with America Good for Kids?
No. The play deals with adult themes and has a brief nude scene, as well as adult language. However, it makes for a terrific night out for mature audiences.
