What’s the Story of Gypsy?
Gypsy is based on the memoirs of burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee, but the musical is really focused on the backstage story of her relentless mother. Momma Rose travels the country with her two daughters, June and Louise, and their manager, Herbie. While June and Louise wish their mother would settle down and marry Herbie, Rose continues to pursue dreams of stardom for her girls. At first, she concentrates on the younger, more obviously talented June. However, as June grows into a young woman, she tires of being the center of the vaudeville kiddie act. June finally runs away, and Rose turns her laser-like attention to the shy Louise, whom she hopes to fashion into a star. When the act is booked into a burlesque house by mistake, Louise is forced into the spotlight and begins her transformation into the world-renowned striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee.

What is Gypsy Like?
Considered by many to be in the top echelon of musical theater, Gypsy features a famous score (songs include “Let Me Entertain You,” “All I Need is the Girl” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”) and the thrilling role of brassy Rose. Watching an actress tear through the part—and a host of Broadway’s top powerhouse divas have—is a once-in-a-lifetime thrill. At its heart, Gypsy is an engrossing drama (it has been called the Broadway musical’s answer to King Lear), and it unfolds with exquisite pacing, tension and twists to its thrilling conclusion.

Is Gypsy Good for Kids?
A hard-driven monstrous stage mother and burlesque performers are not considered by most to be subject matter for children. For example, there is a trio of downtrodden strippers that allude to solicitation and other subjects for mature audiences. However, older kids who are able to understand the psychological underpinnings of the characters will find a lot to love in this backstage showbiz story. Written in 1959, Gypsy generally offers a suggestion of sexuality rather than overt exploits.

A true Broadway diva with countless productions under her belt, LuPone is perhaps best known to theater fans for her hair-raising vocals and Tony-winning performance as the title character in Evita. More

Boyd Gaines as Herbie
Gaines is most known for his three Tony winning performances in The Heidi Chronicles, She Loves Me and Contact. He was most recently seen on Broadway in Journey's End. More

Laura Benanti as Louise
Benanti garnered raves from both critics and audiences when she replaced Rebecca Luker on Broadway in The Sound of Music and went on to win a Tony Award for her performance of Louise in Gypsy. More
