Jude Law, Spring Awakening and More Honored at London Critics' Circle Awards

Jude Law is honored for the year's best Shakespearean performance.

Jude Law, Rachel Weisz and Spring Awakening were among the winners of the 2010 London Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, presented on January 26 at the Prince of Wales Theatre and hosted by critic Mark Shenton. Honoring productions that opened in 2009, the winners are decided by the independent votes of Drama Section members, with no panel discussions or public/industry influence.

Best New Play: Jerusalem by Jez Butterworth
Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court

The Peter Hepple Award for Best Musical: Spring Awakening
Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, followed by transfer to Novello Theatre

Best Actor: Mark Rylance in Jerusalem

Best Actress: Rachel Weisz in A Streetcar Named Desire
Donmar Warehouse

The John and Wendy Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance: Jude Law in Hamlet
Donmar at Wyndham’s Theatre

Best Director: Rupert Goold for Enron
Headlong at Minerva Theatre, Chichester & Jerwood Theatre Downstairs at the Royal Court

Best Designer: Christopher Oram for Red
Donmar Warehouse

Most Promising Playwright: Alia Bano for Shades
Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court

The Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer: Tom Sturridge in Punk Rock
Lyric Theatre Hammersmith and Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester
