Broadway waited with bated breath as The Merchant of Venice, starring Al Pacino as Jewish moneylender Shylock and Lily Rabe as wealthy heiress Portia, made the leap from its wildly popular run at Shakespeare in the Park over the summer to a new home on the Great White Way. One of Shakespeare’s most thrilling and controversial plays, Merchant swirls stories of love and friendship with themes of prejudice, betrayal, revenge and, of course, "the quality of mercy."
