Before Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 film of the same name, opened on March 29 at the Nederlander Theater, stars Jeremy JordanKara Lindsay, and the rest of the company gathered around as ensemble member Aaron J. Albano was awarded with the fabled Gypsy Robe. The ritual, which started in 1950 when Bill Bradley, in the chorus of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, borrowed a robe from fellow cast member and sent it to a friend in Call Me Madam on opening night, has continued and become a time honored tradition on the Great White Way. After donning the colorful frock, Albano jogged around the stage as everyone reached out to touch the Gypsy Robe for good luck before taking their places on the stage of the Nederlander Theatre.
