Jesse L. Martin Lands Role as Debra Messing's Love Interest on Smash

Jesse L. Martin will play an artistic director on 'Smash.'

Jesse L. Martin will join the cast of Smash in a recurring role during the Broadway-themed series' upcoming second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Martin will play Scott Welker, the artistic director of a theater company and potential love interest for Julia (Debra Messing). Smash will return to NBC in early 2013.

Cast members Brian d'Arcy James (who played Julia's husband) and Will Chase (Julia's former boyfriend) both departed the series after the first season. Tony nominee Daniel Sunjata has also been previously reported to join the series as a love interest for Messing. 

Martin has appeared on Broadway in Rent, The Merchant of Venice, The Government Inspector and Timon of Athens. His off-Broadway credits include The Winter's Tale, Fully Committed and The Arabian Nights. For nearly 10 years he also played Detective Ed Green on TV's Law & Order. His other TV and film credits include The Philanthropist, Joyful Noise, A Christmas Carol, Ally McBeal, 413 Hope St. and the 2005 movie adaptation of Rent
