What Is the Story of Little Miss Sunshine?
Little Miss Sunshine takes audience members on a road trip from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to California with the eccentric Hoover family. There’s no-nonsense motivational speaker Richard, his devoted wife Sheryl, their jaded son (who has taken a vow of silence) Dwayne, porn-obsessed Grandpa, heartbroken professor Uncle Frank, and last but not least, bubbly young daughter Olive. The entire family crams into a yellow VW bus so Olive can compete in the “Little Miss Sunshine” beauty pageant, and craziness ensues along the way. When they finally arrive in California, the Hoovers must come together to support Olive and help her win the crown.

Critics’ Reviews

Last but not least is the lovable Hannah Nordberg. When it comes to talent, there’s nothing small about this little miss.

Review by Joe Dziemianowicz from New York Daily News

Ms. Nordberg is frisky and fun, neither overplaying Olive’s oddball quirks nor milking her heart-tugging role as the glue gun holding the family together.

Review by Charles Isherwood from The New York Times

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Little Miss Sunshine Like?
Based on the quirky 2006 movie of the same name, Little Miss Sunshine features a minimalist set that transforms into the Hoovers’ dining room, bus and more with the help of projection screens, yellow chairs on wheels and clever choreography. Throughout the story, Olive’s four pageant competitors appear to offer sideline commentary, with hilarious results. The catchy score by William Finn (Falsettos, 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) features both lighthearted tunes and emotional ballads. Featuring a talented cast led by the adorable Hannah Nordberg as Olive, Little Miss Sunshine is a heartwarming evening of off-Broadway fun.

Is Little Miss Sunshine Good For Kids?
Although the musical’s protagonist is a young girl, don’t be fooled—Little Miss Sunshine is not for kids. The original film is rated R, and although the musical is slightly tamer than its movie counterpart, the musical is full of adult humor. Teens are likely to enjoy this show, especially if they are fans of the movie.
