Wolf Hall Parts One & Two — Nominee for Best Play

Opened: April 9, 2015

Authors: Based on the novel by Hilary Mantel and adapted by Mike Poulton

The Story: Despite poor beginnings in 15th century England, Thomas Cromwell rose to power and political prominence during one of the most formative times in English history. He became a member of parliament and an advisor to Henry VIII, in no small part because he was instrumental in Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon (and thus the Catholic church) and marriage to Anne Boleyn, the death of Catholic stalwart Thomas More and Anne's eventual beheading.

Based On: Hilary Mantel's award-winning historical novel Wolf Hall and its equally lauded sequel Bring Up the Bodies.

Show History: Wolf Hall Parts One & Two premiered at Royal Shakespeare Company's Swan Theatre in Stratford-Upon-Avon in early 2014, and moved to the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End that May.

Producers: Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, Matthew Byam Shaw, Nia Janis & Nick Salmon for Playfull Productions UK, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Jam Theatricals, Ron Kastner, Kyodo Tokyo, Inc., Tulchin Bartner Productions, WLE MSG, Jane Bergère, Scott M. Delman, Rebecca Gold, Just for Laughs Theatricals, Kit Seidel, Triple Play Productions, Gabrielle Palitz, Georgia Gatti, Jessica Genick, Will Trice, The Shubert Organization, The Royal Shakespeare Company

Other Honors:
—Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding New Broadway Play
—Drama League Award nomination for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play

Fun Fact: Scottish film star James McAvoy (recently of X-Men franchise fame) played Thomas Cromwell in an early reading of Wolf Hall, but the role ultimately went to fellow UK star Ben Miles, perhaps best known for his role in the British TV rom-com Coupling.
