The Story:
A charismatic con artist, the "Reverend" Jonas Nightingale, gets stuck in a small Kansas town after his caravan’s bus breaks down. After pitching his revival tent, Jonas butts heads with the local sheriff, Marla McGowan, who is determined to stop him from taking the townspeople's money. When he becomes romantically involved with the sheriff and gets to know her wheelchair-bound son, Jonas is forced to question his life choices and goals.

Based On:
The musical was inspired by the 1992 feature film of the same name, which starred Steve Martin as Jonas Nightingale.

Show History:
After two workshop presentations (in 2008 and 2010), Leap of Faith had its world premiere at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in September 2010. The show was re-tooled for Broadway with the addition of Tony winner Warren Leight as co-librettist with screenwriter Janus Cercone. Raúl Esparza created the role of Jonas Nightingale and has played it in every incarnation of the show.

Fun Fact:
In Leap of Faith's L.A. premiere production, single mom Marla (played by Brooke Shields) and the sheriff (played by Jarrod Emick) were two different characters. On Broadway, the roles have been combined and are played by Jessica Phillips.
