Lucky Broadway insiders—reporters, press agents and bona fide stars like Liza Minnelli and Harvey Fierstein—gathered at the AMC/Loews 34th Street Cinema on November 29 for an advance screening of Bill Condon's film version of Dreamgirls. In a witty speech before the screening, Condon joked that he was happy not to have to explain that Dreamgirls had originally been a Broadway musical, and he spoke of how much Michael Bennett's original production had meant to him. (The film is dedicated to the late director/choreographer.) Condon also introduced composer Henry Krieger and lighting designers Peggy Eisenhauer and Jules Fisher, who lit the film's many lavish musical numbers. Broadway.com was first in line to catch this exciting event.
