The Public Sings! A Soaring Success!
On January 30, a one-night-only event was held at City Center to honor one of New York's most cherished theatrical institutions, Joseph Papp's Public Theater. Billed as The Public Sings!, the benefit featured a veritable who's who of artists that, to varying degrees, have found shelter at some point in their careers under the Public Theater's all-inclusive roof. As directed by Public alum James Lapine (Golden Child, The Winter's Tale) the concert featured a roster of songs from the Public's legacy. Musical numbers from Hair, A Chorus Line, Runaways, Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk and Caroline, or Change, among others, were sung by an diverse batch of performers, including Natalie Portman, Eartha Kitt, Savion Glover, Idina Menzel, Donna Murphy, Zach Braff and Meryl Streep.
