Chasing Manet's Big Opening Night at Primary Stages

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? According to playwright Tina Howe, whose new play Chasing Manet had its world premiere at Primary Stages’ 59E59 Theater on April 9, you definitely can. The final production of Primary Stage’s 2008-2009 season, the comedy follows the unlikely friendship of a blind, upper-crust Bostonian and a cheery Jewish mother during their time at the pleasant (but utterly confining) Mount Airy Nursing Home. Fortunately, when the pair, played by Tony Award winner Jane Alexander and Lynn Cohen, form a plot to escape to Paris on the QE2, the shenanigans really get rolling. The show drew out a bevy of Primary veterans, including cast members from this Broadway season’s transfer of the company’s acclaimed Dividing the Estate, who joined the Manet mavens and co. for a sweet opening celebration at Central Park South’s Sarabeth’s.
