Phenomenal contemporary Richard II
"The cast was INCREDIBLE!!! Michael Urie is one of the best and brightest actors I’ve ever seen on the stage. My 15 year old daughter accompanied me and absolutely loved it. She’s reading Shakespeare at school and talked about how incredible it is to see it in person. If you can - GO before it’s no longer at the theater!! "

Come for Urie, Stay for Urie!
"Actually a great cast across the board, but Michael Urie is SO much fun to watch. Who else can make a Shakespeare historical play hilarious, yet meaningful? Seeing him as Hamlet in DC brought me to NYC to watch him in Richard II, and it was well worth the trip. How did the Ugly Betty antagonist get so good at the Bard? No idea. But I hope to see him in more live productions in the future. Additionally the pacing, set design, costumes, and 1980s Manhattan-inspired setting were something to revel in. I can't put it much better than the NY Times review of the show, but it was amazing. *NOTE: the venue did not have a liquor license, but DID have incredibly tasty mocktails available instead. They were so good I wish I'd gotten the recipe for the "Empty Crown" cocktail. Nicely done Astor Place Theatre."

I crown this Richard II a hit
"For the first time I felt I understood the characters and especially Michael's interpretation of Richard II. I saw parallels between the power struggles then and those today in the US because they are timeless. The patriarchy keeps on making the same mistakes. Loyalties shift, treason is redefined and lap dogs can be found sucking up to the new leadership at the expense of the old. I enjoyed he stylized production design, music, the glass "prison/cage, costume design, lighting."

An energetic Richard II
"Michael Urie is brilliant! This Richard II is reminiscent of Richard Burton’s Hamlet. The sense of urgency adds energy and emotion that keeps the play moving. This play is full of passion and the cast knows it. Ron Canada also shines, but the entire cast is steeped in the play and they tell the story so well that the setting is incidental, though, I believe well conceived. The director edited the play in a way that reminded me of Jamie Lloyd’s Sunset BLVD, especially with Urie’s Gloria Swanson moment at the end. I loved this production so much! It’s a must see!!"

About Richard II

Ambition and betrayal reign supreme in this electrifying reimagining of Shakespeare’s poetic masterpiece. Set in 1980s Manhattan, the neon skyline and shadowy backrooms become an epic battleground of identity and power, where a king’s divine right crumbles beneath the weight of human frailty. Michael Urie’s virtuosic performance and Craig Baldwin’s inventive adaptation make Richard’s tragic descent freshly immediate, staged a stone’s throw from the site of the historic Astor Place Riots, the original American cocktail of politics, insurrection, and Shakespeare.

This is Shakespeare like no other — intimate, innovative, and utterly unmissable.
