Michael Gambon will star in a limited engagement of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape at the Duchess Theatre in London, according to whatsonstage.com. The production, which is transferring from Dublin’s Gate Theatre, will run from September 15 to November 20, directed by Gate artistic director Michael Colgan.
Beckett’s 1958 drama centers on the title character, an old man who replays passages from 30 years of tapes recorded on his birthday. The play was most recently staged in London in 2006 starring the late playwright Harold Pinter.
Gambon, best known in America for playing Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, has now tackled three Beckett classics, with Krapp’s Last Tape following Eh, Joe in 2006 and Endgame in 2004. Other recent stage credits include No Man’s Land, Celebration, Henry IV, The Caretaker, A Number, The Unexpected Man and Troilus and Cressida. Gambon’s only Broadway appearance was a Tony-nominated 1996 performance in David Hare’s Skylight.
As previously announced, after Krapp’s Last Tape, the Duchess has been booked for the musical adaptation of Love Story, which begins performances on November 27. The theater’s current tenant, The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, is set to close on September 11.
