Casting has been announced for the Donmar Warehouse's production of George Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer, the first production under the supervision of new Donmar artistic director Josie Rourke. Performances begin February 9, 2012, with opening night set for February 14. The limited engagement concludes on April 14.
The cast includes Nancy Carroll (After the Dance) as Silvia, Mackenzie Crook (a Tony nominee for Jerusalem) as Sergeant Kite, Mark Gatiss (All About My Mother) as Captain Brazen, Gawn Grainger (Onassis) as Mr. Balance, Tobias Menzies (The Children's Hour) as Captain Plume and Rachel Stirling (An Ideal Husband) as Melinda.
The Recruiting Office follows Captain Plume as he recruits the men of Shrewsbury for the King’s army with promises of money, glory and adventure. He’s also determined to make a conquest of Silvia, but as she’s now an heiress she can afford to put him to the test. All the while, the scheming Melinda is toying with the affections of Captain Brazen and the gentleman Mr. Worthy.
The Donmar's season will also include Robert Holman’s Making Noise Quietly, directed by Peter Gill, from April 19 through May 26, followed by a new version of Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s satirical drama The Physicists by Jack Thorne, which runs May 31 through July 21.
