Story

Part riveting historical drama, part scorching satire, Talene Monahon’s Meet the Cartozians pulls back the curtain on a startling chapter of American history you may never have heard. This bold, witty new play follows two sets of Armenian Americans: one man fighting for legal recognition in the 1920s, while a century later, his descendant fights for followers and a competent glam team. A wildly imaginative and deeply compelling story of culture and heritage, Meet the Cartozians asks who gets to belong — and at what cost?

Brilliant insight into Armenian identity 🇦🇲
"This was a brilliant and solid piece of theatre. The playwright said so succinctly everything that needed to be said about the complexities of being Armenian, white, not white. The levels of privilege and how we’ve relied on certain things that come with ticking certain boxes….. but that doesn’t always go our way. And being Armenian with no place to call home, reflects back to these slippery unresolved zones. The nuances that have morphed over the last 100 years and the issues that are still so unresolved. So good! Brava to this brilliant young writer. "

Gripping, Entertaining, and Educational
"This play is incredible for its ability to teach without preaching. Beneath the humor and heart is an exploration of identity, connection, and the strange, beautiful ways we try to understand one another. The play trusts its audience - inviting reflection rather than demanding conclusions, and that trust pays off."

A play about Armenians but not just about Armenians.
"Thought-provoking story about where we draw the lines of ethnicity and race and how that changes (or doesn’t) over time. Dramatic play with plenty of opportunities to chuckle! "
