"The story line was ok but what's disappointing is the presentation of the story. It came across very weak. The teenage MJ could also use a better outfit--not just black jeans. "

Loud and very energetic
"Dancer troupe was great. Something was a bit off in the adult MJ dancing. Didn’t capture the fluidity of Michael Jackson’s fantastic dancing. Maybe no one can. Good performance otherwise. "

Needed more
"Loved the stage production. Amazing but stage venture seemed too small. Like a beginner off broadway. Differently could have had 2 double fill in dancers. Wasn’t impressed enough. Had the the perfect center Mezz seats. Would have been more interesting to have real life or best of drag queens coming across the stage to hug and kiss MJ. Like Madonna, Liza Just even 5 would have added the extra drama. I thought the main Michael was good but I’ve seen soooooooo many other Vegas types would have been more impressive. Ripping his t shir off was a classic move but wasn’t done. May be because of the equipment he needed under for sound. His moon walk wasn’t great. We have become too exposed to seeing some really great impersonators I’ve become a bit jaded. Dancers customs could have been cooler. So I had high expectations but overall very good. And cheers to the sound/lights casting creators. WOW. AND LOVE HOW LOUD IT WAS. "

My impression of MJ the Musical
"There was a lot of high energy in the production which held my attention some of the time. But after a while, I found myself losing interest. The story line was not very strong and was somewhat repetitive. Probably, it's because I am a senior citizen, but the music did not really appeal to me either. Overall, I think the production relied too much on over-the-top, high impact stage setting, but in my view, that could not make up for a production that was only fairly satisfactory."

Just ok.
"The acting was fairly good. The story line was good, but over done, repetitive. We would’ve liked to see more MJ musical productions, performances of his classic hits and stage productions. "

It’s all about the music!
"Michael Jackson was a consummate entertainer, I loved his music, dancing, etc.
I found there was too much talk about “allegations,” not being understood; he comes off as pathetic in the show."

"Piece really had no plot and it’s rough imitating someone as iconic as Michael Jackson. It was enjoyable, but I’d invest in seeing other shows first."

Not great
"I had high hopes for this show as I love MJ. Best in show was MJ mother.
The stand in for MJ wasn't great. Actor who played his father flubbed his lines twice. The dancers were ok. The choreography didn't allow for the dancers to complete turns etc.
The sound was uneven.
This show needs a reboot...very unnecessarily expensive, feel ripped off."

The show was just okay.
"The cast members performed well & their costumes were on point! However, the storyline didn’t hold my attention. It’s pretty much a retelling of MJ’s life but without the WOW effect. I did drift off a time or two. "

Needs a story
"I knew the music for MJ would be great. The dancing was fantastic as well. I just wish there was a better story line. It just didn't flow with the music and I think there was enough to make it flow.
If you want to hear the music of Michael Jackson and great dancing, this is totally worth it. If you want a Broadway quality musical, not so much. "

Disappointing production quality for what an average Broadway typically is
"MJ enthusiast here.
If you plan on seeing this show, do NOT come in with the expectations that this is a “musical” - the script and production of the show felt more like a documentary story of Michael’s life than a musical featuring hit songs and dances.
Advertisements read as performing 40 songs by Michael but they are not full songs, 30 seconds to 2 minute snippets of each song (except like 5 full songs). Performances of each song were very lackluster as they include very minimal outfit changes, stage display changes, and overall organization. This may have related to the script of the show being an “MTV interview during an MJ rehearsal” so 80% of the show takes place with 1 stage and set of uniforms with several actors just standing around on stage
waiting for their turn to perform.
The dialogue of the script felt very unnecessary at times as fluff to elongate the show to a full 2.5 hours.
This review is NOT anything against the actual performers. They were all very talented. However comparative to other Broadway shows in NYC, it was very noticeable how poor the production quality & script/story was vs. expectations of a musical.
TLDR: The show felt like watching a glorified street performance."

Overhyped
"The acting was above average, and the production itself was well executed. However, the storyline felt overplayed and took unnecessary liberties, with the portrayal of MJ’s sexuality coming across as forced and over the top. The music, arguably the most important part of a Michael Jackson musical, was not highlighted enough, leaving it overshadowed by heavy-handed themes. While the stagecraft was polished, the overall show leaned too far into a “woke” angle, making it more disappointing than inspiring."
