"This production is wonderful! Mr. Washington, Mr. Gyllenhaal and Ms. Osborne are superb, leading a brilliant supporting cast as directed by the great Kenny Leon. The timeless story of truth being blinded by one's envy, the mistreatment of women and insatiable need for power and control are themes our current culture needs to ponder collectively and personally."

Unbelievable
"What an exquisite and special experience. With the cast led by Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, Shakespeare is brought to a level that I did not know was possible. No frills and minimal props meant that the actors really were the set, and I was transported and immersed (as was my group) so fully that we did not feel we were watching a play. Denzel IS Othello, Jake IS Iago and all of the emotions that come with observing those characters at such an intimate level left me with an experience I will still be processing for weeks to come. "

Fast-paced with Star Performance
"All the actors were fabulous. Denzel and Jake had a lot of running dialogue and their delivery was perfect! Jake's 'Lago' was mesmerizing and powerful. Denzel's 'Othello' was truly transforming. I loved how the stage was set before the show began. The work that goes into a production like this is amazing. "
"What is there not to like when your two favorite actors are performing in front of you. All of the actors and actress were amazing. Doing Shakespeare in modern time was a very cool experience and allowed it to be more real and believable. 10 out 10. A must see."

Brilliant Lead Performances in an Overall Stellar Show!
"Seeing two A-listers on stage at the same time is breathtaking. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a masterful performance as Iago, as if he was born to play this role and has been doing it for months rather than in week 2 of previews. Denzel is a legend and his Othello is like no other. The production is further elevated by the rest of the outstanding cast. We were seated in the back row and felt right at the heart of the action, as there is not a bad seat in the intimate setting of the Barrymore Theatre. This show is worth every penny!"

Worth it
"Iago is the protagonist of Othello. Jake Gyllenhaal was phenomenal. Denzel was impressive as the tormented Othello. The actresses playing Desdemona -,
molly Osborne, and Emilia-Kimber elayne sprawl were magnificent. Kudos to cast. Didn't expect modern day costumes and minimalist stage. Acting on point and enjoyed this presentation. Only one thing, Denzel voice didn't project loud enough compared to other actors. I was in 10th row orchestra. Go see if you can. "

Broadway- Othello
"Shakespeare’s Othello has been adapted countless times, but this latest rendition, featuring the powerhouse duo of Denzel Washington as Othello and Jake Gyllenhaal as Iago, breathes fresh intensity into the classic tragedy. Directed with a masterful blend of modern relevance and period authenticity, this adaptation delivers a gripping and emotionally charged experience.
Denzel Washington shines as Othello, bringing both commanding strength and heartrending vulnerability to the role. His performance is layered, capturing the Moor’s deep love for Desdemona, his rise to power, and his tragic descent into jealousy with a gravitas that only an actor of his caliber can bring. Every monologue is delivered with a mesmerizing cadence, and his chemistry with the cast—particularly Iago and Desdemona—is deeply compelling.
Equally mesmerizing is Jake Gyllenhaal’s Iago, a chilling and manipulative villain whose every calculated move feels dangerously real. Gyllenhaal plays Iago with a deceptive charm, making his betrayal all the more insidious. His soliloquies are haunting, drawing the audience into his twisted logic with unsettling ease.
The supporting cast adds to the film’s brilliance. The portrayal of Desdemona (perhaps played by a rising star) brings an innocent yet strong presence, making her fate all the more tragic. The cinematography is stunning, weaving shadow and light to amplify the themes of deception, love, and loss. A bold, evocative score underscores the emotional weight of the drama without overshadowing the Bard’s timeless dialogue.
This Othello is a must-see for Shakespeare enthusiasts and newcomers alike, offering a thrilling exploration of power, manipulation, and the fragility of trust. With Washington and Gyllenhaal delivering career-defining performances, the film is a cinematic triumph—a modern Shakespearean masterpiece that lingers in the mind long after the final scene."

Once in a Lifetime Experience
"Stellar performances, all around. Barrymore theater is stunning and rich in history. Believe when others say there is not a bad seat in this theater. I sat center AA orchestra, great view. Of course, one will have to peer up slightly, I’m tall so no complaints there. Merch was actually reasonably priced, drinks/concession pricey. Arrive early. Open snacks before the show begins. Performances were 10’s across the board. This was a week into previews, and no one called for lines, hesitated, or flubbed. As it is noted that this is a limited engagement (15 weeks!), get there if you can. Bravo."

Riveting performance by 2 A-List Actors
"Denzel and Jake were both excellent. At one point from my seat, Denzel yelled as part of the performance and it felt like he was yelling at me. The entire cast was wonderful and think they did a wonderful job of conveying the dramatic emotions the storyline compels. "

In the near future
"A powerful and emotionally raw production of Othello.
Washington delivered a performance that was quiet but commanding — holding back just enough to let the tension build naturally. His restraint made his strength feel even more grounded. Jake, on the other hand, was a force — intense, layered, and a relentless presence that drove the play forward.
The contemporary setting brought a fresh edge to the story, making it feel urgent and relevant. And the minimalist design? Subtle but effective — it let the performances breathe and kept the focus where it mattered.
A strong, resonant take on a classic.
5 stars.

Denzel isn’t the only great thing about this show!
"The appearance of Washington and Gyllenhal are sure to draw a crowd, but there’s more to see in the show than excellent celebrity performances! The entire cast does an excellent job telling the tale and engaging audiences throughout. Be prepared to come early and read the playbill during intermission instead of scrolling on your phone. Admission and phone policies are no joke. An excellent opportunity to be fully present and enjoy the show! "

A new take with a skilled cast
"The modernization of the Play was an interesting take. I'm not sure if that made it a step up or just a fresh version. Mr Washington is incredible to see in action on the stage. A master, if you will. Mr Gyllenhaal, too, presented a skilled presentation of Iago. These two pair well together, for sure. Ms Osborne rounded The threesome off with a spectacular performance. The entire cast was well suited to the production and the event was truly great!"

Wonderful experience - I love the Barrymore Theater
"Gorgeous theater. We were the second row from the back (row P) and had an amazing view of the play. The seats are offset and the people in front of us were positioned perfectly so we could see everything. Denzel was great but Jake Gyllenhall shines the brightest. I'm not an expert in Shakespeare, but it was a truly memorable show."

Othello Revisited
"I was thrilled to see Othello, which I had studied in high school a long time ago, particularly as it featured a star studded cast. Denzel Washington did a good job as the angst filled general, torn apart by his belief in his wife's indiscretions. Jake Gyllenhaal brought to life the creepy, hatred filled Iago, consumed by revenge. I thought the ladies stole the show, with the cheery, confident innocence of Desdemona and the sassy Emilia, who knew her husband only too well, yet not well enough to prevent the tragedy. The transition of the war to modern day USA, complete with camouflage uniforms and modern insignia, brought home the universality of Shakespeare's themes that seem to magically transcend time and country. The bar scene in which Iago drunkens Cassio was particularly entertaining and fluid in its orchestration. It was an enjoyable performance of Shakespeare and I would definitely recommend it. "
