Redwood. . . A Must See!
"Redwood combines a unique, creative, and innovative approach to the stage while connecting the audience to their own emotions as well as to the larger community. The cast, lead by Idina Menzel, shows a very raw and real portrayal of human emotion, leaving the audience truly moved. This is a show I will see over and over again! "

Made me tear up
"It was my first time at broadway show and I took my 9 yo daughter. We both loved it!!!! Idina has very powerful presence on the stage, this comes to shine even more as the story develops. As a parent, it brought me to tears as every parent can relate. Yes, there are few swearings but I would still recommend it for older kids, my child loved it, but we’re Europeans ;-)."

A very adult dramatic musical
"The play deals with the trauma of losing someone very close to you. Not recommended for children. The cast performances are exceptional. The music sets the right tone throughout, while the book's narrative is weak in some parts. "

Innovative and Creative
"Redwood harnesses a creative approach to storytelling. By creating a new show it takes a risk that the audience has not seen before and yet strings it together by shared human experiences. Experiencing loss and grief, realizing our own human vulnerabilities and weaknesses, and being able to find renewed life in unexpected ways. There is no one in the audience that does not have their own story that they can relate in some way. "

Teary but so beautiful
"Definitely for fans of Dear Evan Hanson or Idina Menzel. The story while sad is told beautifully. The talented cast could have been singing anything and it would be worth the price of the ticket. I like the novelty of the sets which was the perfect complement to the beauty of the songs. I would see it again with tissues ready in hand. "

Soul Touching
"The first song didn’t set the tone well and I was worried for the rest of the musical. But gosh darn the rest was amazing, touching, and everyone in the audience was crying. "

Simple, heartfelt and outstanding musical
"I really liked that it was a very intimate musical. Idina is quite outstanding and you don’t really need much of a show because her voice is incredible.
Perhaps the storyline could be a bit better, but I liked overall the songs and the message. "

Incredible Staging
"Bought tickets because Idena Menzel. While I enjoyed the show it was a little dark at times. The cast was outstanding and the tree climbing was pretty great. What I enjoyed the most was the staging. How they depicted the redwoods was GREAT. Being from Northern California where the redwoods are there depiction was spot on."

Heartfelt and emotional with ourstandingvperformances
"I liked how swept away with the characters I felt. It tugged at your heart and was easy to relate to the lost feelings you have after a loss . It took about 10-15 minutes to get into it but then you felt every emotion. "

Entertaining, but still disappointing
"Seemed to be created simply as a Broadway vehicle for Idina Menzel, who has lost a step. Plot was thin and trite, music not great (mostly scream-singing), but staging was clever and beautiful."

See the show if you’re an Idina fan.
"I didn’t like all the rage and anger and screaming.
I didn’t like that she was a poster child for how not to deal with grief (I have also lost a child and understand wanting to run away and feel overwhelming grief).
I liked the trees; they felt real; didn’t care for the fire. Loved Idina flying around the tree and singing while hanging upside down.
A lot went down before the last couple of minutes of reconciliation; it was a depressing evening for me, but the audience loves Idina!"

Disappointed
"The songs and storyline were very weak. Loved the cast but the first 30 minutes was very chaotic and hard to follow. I give it a 2.5 because Idina is amazing but unfortunately that did not prevail over a lot of the content. "

Idina is amazing but the “set” was dizzying!
"I LOVED getting to hear Idina Menzel live—I think she may have THE best female voice I’ve ever heard on broadway!!! That said, other than the amazing tree, the “set” was really mostly white walls with images projected on them and it made me totally dizzy!!! I had to close my eyes many times throughout the show to not feel sick from the parallax effect of the imagery. I’ve never had that kind of reaction to a show, and I would hesitate to recommend it….even though I thoroughly enjoyed Idina’s singing. "

Great life lesson terrible for children
"Writing this as a mom of many children who adore broadway. The overall message of the show is fantastic on the impact of trauma on our lives. However this is not a show I would take anyone under the age of 16 to see. We didn’t find any reviews with more details regarding the storyline, so we were very surprised when it was filled with profanity, lgbtq relationships, drug references, and overdosing. Thankfully our 11 year old is very mature or we would have needed to walk out of the theatre. We had some great conversations on our walk back to the hotel about how we could glean some golden crumbs and release the rest of what we just experienced.
That being said. The show itself from an adult perspective was great. Very heavy trauma topics covered and hemmed up in a message of hope. Idina was amazing as expected, but the rest of the cast, specifically Becca, blew our minds. Amazing cast. The music is fantastic, stage design is creative and stunning.
Overall I liked it from an adult perspective, but felt terrible as a mom. I had done my research and found nothing giving any indication on content and children. This is why I am leaving my review, to help others before they end up in a seat that cost a large chunk of budget regretting having purchased them for their family experience.
Outside we asked the door attendants where to wait for stage door, staff was not kind. We waiting with about 20 other people, had a nice spot and 2 (I hate to even call them men) males literally moved my 11yo daughter out of their way to be closer to the railing and cussed us out. The staff observed the situation and rolled their eyes and disregarded it. Shortly after another dad pushed her off the curb to get closer. We left at that point. The lack of safety concern for children was apparent. This sealed my decision to not recommend this for anyone with children. Between content, theatre staff, and behaviors of those attending I cannot recommend it. "

Sadly underwhelming
"Nothing memorable here….songs were mediocre, set was monotonous. Best voice in the show was Khaila Wilcoxon…..she’s definitely a star. We are longtime Idina fans, but she needed better material."

Huge Disappointment! Left humming no tunes…
"Nothing against Idina at all or the talent of the rest of the cast. The script and music were forgettable. In order to be moved at the end, you have to care about the character. As soon as you meet her, you’re supposed to sympathize with her plight as she drives away from her job. It takes a while to find out why she’s running, but by then, it’s obvious where this tale is going. The character has a pretty good life going through serious pain, but it’s just hard to get emotionally moved by it in such a short setup. Biggest criticism is EVERY song sounds the same. There’s nothing memorable about the music. There fine songs, but NOT Broadway Showstoppers. I felt like so many songs tried to end the way Defying Gravity did and having Idina up in the sky didn’t help the audience not make that connection. The supporting actresses character was ridiculously angry and it got repetitive and old quickly. She even alluded to it referencing Groundhog Day. Also I was shocked it ended in one act. Actually, I was happy it was, because I’m not sure I would’ve stayed for the second act. "

Horrible show
"Aside from a few moments of nice singing this show was horrible. I’ve seen hundreds of broadway shows over the years and this ranks amount the lowest. If idina menzel were not in it- I doubt anyone would watch it at the community theater level. There was just enough non essential dialogue to get to a new song, many of which were not memorable. The son did have a lovely voice which we finally heard at the end of the show. The set was awful- I can’t say anyone should spend money on this"
