A fun spectacle
"Liked the stage setting, costumes and dance routines. The book adaptation is OK, some important parts are skipped (Gatsby's real back story) and the character of Daisy is certainly not represented as it truly is in the book. While it does depict the privilege and selfishness of her and the rich, it could have been handled better. "

I've had Better
"This is a slow-roll. For the first few minutes, you are wondering "What in the heck is going on? Who is this guy?" It's not clear if the first character is a narrator or someone important to the story (spoiler; it's the latter). The dialog is meh. The dance numbers are so-so. More "flare" and "oo-ah" than entertaining. Everyone is there to see the two leads. That's it. The show really has nothing else to offer. You will not be talking about the show after about a week. Listen to the album. You know that one or two songs that you can actually stand putting on "repeat" a few times? Those are the best ones. And even those are left out to dry, to stand on their own. No foundation. No carry-over. No reason for the songs to really exist other than to have a couple of songs the two leads can show their talents with. If you have one show to see, pick something else. Or stay home and watch the movie. It's the same story and is just as memorable. "

Loved the dancers
"The dancers were fantastic. The lead singers were very good. Not enough action in the play."

Meh.
"Choreography, costumes, set design, lighting, pit orchestra and the talent: all excellent. The production as a whole: nope. It didn’t know what it was doing or where it was going. Was it a comedy? It tried, but it shouldn’t have. For a musical set in the jazz age, some jazz - or even a nod to jazz - would’ve been welcome (frankly I think it was necessary). Each song sounded as if it had been composed for a different musical: no cohesiveness whatsoever. I can only remember one motif (“Dai——-sy!”). Early in Act II characters Nick and Jordan sang what I could only describe as a 1980s watered-down Jeffrey Osborne-esque song, but not a good one and not one that I can remotely remember (or want to). The ensemble was underused once Act I properly got underway. While the actor who played Nick is super talented, he made Nick sort of clownish. I don’t recall a clownish Nick from the book. Other than the costumes, I didn’t feel we were in 1925 (certainly not from the music). I also didn’t get a sense of the slow, sloppy, hot summers of Long Island that were depicted in the book. Perhaps this musical shouldn’t have been a musical at all. It would’ve made a brilliant play, as long as key parts of the book were included (many weren’t in the musical). Jeremy Jordan is of course a huge talent, but several times in his songs he emphasised a break in his voice that sounded almost like the beginning of a yodel. I’ve heard a few male MT stars do the same thing so I’m guessing it’s a fad, but one that I hope soon passes. Mr Jordan’s voice is glorious without it. All in all, TGG doesn’t know what it wants to or should be. At least that’s what screamed at me up in the mezzanine. It just didn’t work. PS The majority of the audience was shocked by the ending (which I won’t spoil here), judging by their gasps and screams. Is the book no longer on school reading lists?!"

Long and not particularly engaging.
"Sets were gorgeous. Singing was good, not great. Dancing was very good. Should cut at least one song fron act 2. "

Great performers but would not see again
"I knew very little about the story before attending show. I was excited based on the reviews. Set design, performers, orchestra were all top notch! The main tap dance in the second act- absolutely incredible!! Overall for me though, this was not a show that I loved with the storyline and I would not go see again. "

Great show, good performance, pretty unremarkable music
"The show and the performance were great and very Broadway style and scale. Pyrotechnics, a real car on stage, amazing decorations and costumes, very good voices and convincing performance. And yet, I couldn’t appreciate the music at all. I don’t remember even a single tune. It all sounded kind of AI generated, “nice” and average. So if you are looking for a show with a good music, this is not the one. "

It was okay but not great.
"Actors talented and working hard. But music and lyrics were not interesting or memorable. Loved the costumes and choreography. Show and dialogue too over the top and dramatic."

Too loud
"Liked the scenery, costumes and dancing. Didn’t like how loud everything was — voices, orchestra, and even the singing. Too loud to understand most of the lyrics. You should have subtitles so audience can understand the lyrics. It’s a shame that they are wasted because the singers are miked and do not enunciate clearly."

Should have been better
"The drama and tragedy of Gatsby was traded for farce and cheap laughs. Maybe some works were not meant to be musicals. "

Fell Short
"As a Gatsby snob I would say while the show is visually appealing the plot changes created a loss of the essence of what Fitzgerald intended in the novel. The talented actors did their best but, unfortunately, it doesn't make up for the loss of what could have been an excellent production. "

Wonderful costumes and sets!
"It really didn’t translate very well into a musical. The actors were all great but the story itself did not work as a musical……at least for me. The costumes were amazing as were the different sets. "

Not so Great Gatsby

Disappointing
"The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite novels. It does not work as a musical, however; it loses the essence of the story, the tragedy of the "lost generation." The score was also rather unforgettable; I rarely leave a show without at least one song running through my head for a few days; but not this time. I can't say I even remember a song from this show, which I saw yesterday. The cast was very talented, particularly the dancers, but chemistry was lacking. Tom Buchanan and Myrtle gave the most memorable performances in the show. The costumes were lovely to look at, and the set was well done! "

I think they had AI write the songs
"Ok the set was amazing and Jordan Jeremy + Eva Noblezada were AMAZING. But the music was so bad and the story was insanely confusing for someone who didn’t read the book. Now, my husband is a HS English teacher and he teaches the book each year. He didn’t like the way they translated the book to stage and felt it lacked direction. "

Over dramatized and way too loud, great set!
"We’ve all read the book or seen the movie so there’s some familiarity to the show, and it executed well and on par. While the acting was great, it was all over the top, every scene was dramatic. Set design and execution was flawless and really wowed and impressed. Okay trying to keep this short, my biggest complaint, also easily fixable, was the speaker volume was set to level 11. Numerous times was it over 100 decibels, reached 110 sometimes. So while the singing was great I found myself regularly blocking my ears which deterred from the magic. "

Poor plot and poor writing
"Poor plot, poor writing and poor songs is how I summarize this show. Great actors and solid musicians, but this was just downright boring with so much emphasis on infidelity that it was not enjoyable. "

The energy of all the performers was not the same
"The male lead was phenomenal and the secondary leads. Female lead’s acting was wonderful, but standard vocals could be improved. When she belted lyrics she was best. The dancers needed improvement. Being in the field myself, the sharpness and energy was low. Some were not even singing. The groups tap sounds were, I believed, dubbed to make it sound muffled and as if there were more dancers in the routine. Unfortunately, myself and guests were disappointed. :("

Written on the Fly?
"Wow, didn’t like this one at all. I thought it was poorly written and executed. Def a level down from many shows. The script didn’t portray Gatsby as mysterious and dark as intended. The songs were for the most part whiny and overly redundant, except for 2-3 numbers. "

A sad pastiche of the film
"The Great Gatsby on Broadway promised a fresh take on F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic novel, but the result felt more like a pastiche of the 2013 Baz Luhrmann film. Rather than offering a bold reinterpretation, the production leaned heavily on familiar visuals and themes, rendering it basic and uninspired. The set design, though opulent, lacked innovation, relying on clichéd representations of Gatsby's world rather than creating something truly captivating. Similarly, the costumes borrowed too much from the film's flamboyance, failing to add any new dimensions to the aesthetic. This dependence on existing interpretations made the production feel stagnant rather than imaginative. While the dialogue remained true to Fitzgerald’s prose, it often felt more expository than evocative. The performances, though competent, suffered from shallow character development. Gatsby’s charisma, Daisy’s complexity, and Nick’s introspection were flattened into predictable archetypes, leaving little emotional impact. The musical elements also fell short, blending period-inspired tunes with a nod to modernity, but without the boldness or innovation that made the film’s soundtrack memorable. Instead of enhancing the story, the music felt like a half-hearted imitation. Ultimately, The Great Gatsby lacked the creativity and depth required for a compelling stage adaptation. It delivered a surface-level portrayal of a rich and complex story, offering little for audiences seeking either nostalgia or fresh insights. For fans of the novel or the film, this production is likely to feel disappointingly prosaic."
