When the Tony-winning musical Spamalot opened at Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre on July 8, the performance included an improvised lyric spoofing Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, who announced her resignation as Governor of Alaska on July 3. According to a theater spokesperson, Rick Holmes as the French Taunter sang the following to the tune of “Frère Jacques": “Sarah Palin, Sarah Palin, Please come back, Please come back. Who will see the Russians, Who will see the Russians, If they attack? If they attack?”
Spamalot creator Eric Idle and co-writer John Du Prez were on hand at the opening and took a bow after the performance. Although the Palin jibe drew roars, the Ahmanson spokesperson explained that Holmes can change it at will, since the song is improvised.
In addition to Holmes (Sir Lancelot until August 2), the L.A. cast of Spamalot includes John O’Hurley (King Arthur), Merle Dandridge (The Lady of the Lake), James Beaman (Sir Robin), Ben Davis (Sir Dennis Galahad), Jeff Dumas (Patsy), Matthew Greer (Sir Lancelot beginning August 4), Christopher Gurr (Sir Bedevere), Christopher Sutton (Not Dead Fred, Prince Herbert), Matt Allen, Graham Bowen, Nigel Columbus, Timothy Connell, Cara Cooper, Lenny Daniel, Andrew Fitch (beginning July 22), Alexa Glover, David Havasi, Erik Hayden (until July 21), Sarah Lin Johnson, Carissa Lopez, Jennifer Mathie, Lyn Philistine, Tera-Lee Pollin, Darryl Semira, Vanessa Sonon and Paula Wise.
