Producer Manny Fox is developing Family Fortune, a new musical to be written by Latino musician Alberto Carrion with pop-music producer Nile Rodgers (“We Are Family,” “Like a Virgin”) on board as co-composer and producer of the musical score. Though still in its development phase, Family Fortune has booked a tryout at New Orleans’ Mahalia Jackson Theater for summer 2012, with hope of moving to Broadway, according to Variety.
Fox’s wife, Cinda Firestone Fox, will write the book, basing the comedy loosely on her experiences as a member of the Firestone Tire and Rubber family. The show reportedly will be set set in Puerto Rico, where a salsa dancer marries a man from a rich family and gets sucked into a battle over the clan’s assets. Fox and his family are currently based out of Puerto Rico.
Fox, best known on Broadway as one of the producers behind the hit Duke Ellington musical Sophisticated Ladies, is reportedly also at work on a new version of that show with the goal of a production in Las Vegas.
