Academy Award-nominated director Spike Lee will present Lemon Andersen’s County of Kings in association with the Public Theater. The play, performed by the author, begins a six-week limited engagement at the Public on September 29. Opening night is set for October 21.
Featured last year as part of the Public Theatre’s Under The Radar Festival, Andersen’s County of Kings gives a tough, poignant biographical account of a good kid growing up in an unforgiving environment. The one-man show weaves hard-edged drama with urban poetry as the Brooklyn hip-hop artist spins his own coming-of-age memoir about growing up during the birth of hip-hop.
Brooklyn born and raised, Andersen has been featured as a regular on HBO’s Def Poetry. The artist was an original cast member and co-writer of Russell Simmons' Tony-winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. His film credits include Inside Man and The Soloist.
In addition to Lee and the Public Theater, County of Kings is presented by Steve Colman and Jayson Jackson.
