The London production of La Cage aux Folles will close on January 2, 2010. As previously reported, Douglas Hodge will reprise his Olivier Award-winning performance as Albin in the Broadway-bound production from November 30-January 2. The show played for over a year at the West End’s Playhouse Theatre.
La Cage aux Folles, directed by Terry Johnson, began life at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory and was nominated for seven Olivier Awards, winning Best Musical Revival. The story centers on nightclub owner Georges, his partner Albin (who headlines under the name Zaza), and Georges’ son, Jean-Michel, who is engaged to the daughter of a right-wing politico.The show features music and lyrics by Jerry Herman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, based on the play by Jean Poiret.
Hodge will play Albin on Broadway when the production moves to the Longacre Theatre in April 2010. London’s La Cage currently stars John Barrowman and Simon Burke. Denis Lawson will replace Burke as Georges on November 30.
