This seldom-produced 1954 show tells the sweeping tale of a girl’s passion for a young man so in love with sea he leaves her—not realizing she’s pregnant with his child. Her marriage of convenience to a wealthy older man desperate for an heir becomes complicated when the sailor returns years later. Sound intense? Maybe a little, but the show is buoyed by Harold Rome’s lush score and breathtaking performances from the leading players.
