With Broadway producers often picking their next projects off their Netflix queues these days, we asked our readers over the weekend which of the 10 movies up for this year’s Best Picture Oscar were most ready for the musical stage. The verdict? After a tight battle with the gritty indie drama Precious, the animated adventure Up came out on top, earning 27% of your votes.
Another eye-popping film from Pixar Studios, Up tells the heartwarming story of a grumpy senior citizen who, faced with a future in a retirement home, sets off on a high-flying journey by lifting his house into the sky with 10,000 helium balloons. Along for the ride are a chubby neighborhood kid, a loving Golden Retriever and a chocolate-loving rare bird named Kevin. Up earned $293 million in its initial release in movie theaters.
Precious came in a close second place with 25% of readers’ votes. A heart-wrenching urban tale of a pregnant African-American teen (Gabourey Sidibe) who escapes an abusive mother (Mo’Nique), the $10 million movie became a surprise hit in theaters, earning $46 million.
The third place winner was An Education, the coming-of-age film about a teenage girl (Carey Mulligan) who falls for an older man (Peter Sarsgaard) in 1960s England. The film earned 11% of the votes.
Earning less than 1% of the votes each are the Iraq war drama The Hurt Locker and the alien flick District 9.
