A revealing documentary about the mid-1990s years of Disney animation will screen at Landmark Sunshine Theatres on East Houston Street in New York on March 26, 27 and 28, giving fans the ultimate behind-the-scenes look at an organization that revolutionized modern animation. Titled Waking Sleeping Beauty, the Don Hahn-helmed doc's New York debut will also include an in-person Q&A with producer Peter Schneider at the 5pm and 7:15pm screenings on March 26; 12pm, 2:30pm, 5pm and 7:15pm screenings on March 27; and 12pm, 2:30pm and 5pm screenings on March 28.
Waking Sleeping Beauty is described this way: "By the mid-1980s, the fabled animation studios of Walt Disney had fallen on hard times. The artists were polarized between newcomers hungry to innovate and old timers not yet ready to relinquish control. These conditions produced a series of box-office flops and pessimistic forecasts. Only a miracle or a magic spell could produce a happy ending. Waking Sleeping Beauty is the true story of how Disney regained its magic with a staggering output of hits, including the The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King and more."
The film includes appearances by Disney innovators Tim Burton, John Lasseter, Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Roy Disney, among others.
