Mariah Carey has withdrawn from the cast of Tyler Perry’s upcoming film adaptation of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf, according to People.com. No reason was provided for her departure, although the report mentioned rumors that the pop star is pregnant.
Earlier this year, Perry announced casting for the film, which will also star Tony winner Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Kimberly Elise, Tony winner Phylicia Rashad, Kerry Washington (Race), Loretta Devine, Macy Gray and Perry himself.
For Colored Girls opened at the Public Theater on May 17, 1976, and transferred to Broadway’s Booth Theatre on September 10, running until July 16, 1978. It was nominated for a 1977 Best Play Tony Award and earned a Featured Actress in a Play Tony for star Trazana Beverley. The PBS American Playhouse series broadcast the play in 1982 with a cast that included Beverley, Alfre Woodard and Lynn Whitfield.
Although Carey's film career was in the gutter following her role in 2001's megaflop Glitter, she has recently redeemed herself as an actress in well-received indie films including WiseGirls, Tennessee and Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, for which she won the Breakthrough Performance Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
