With director Bartlett Sher readying plans to bring Funny Girl back to Broadway in 2012 for its first ever revival, our Weekend Poll asked which actress you'd like to see cast in the iconic role of Fanny Brice. Turns out fans think "I'm the Greatest Star" should be sung by someone who isn't a star at all yet! That's right, 31% of voters say they'd like to see an unknown actress cast in the role over some of Broadway's biggest names. Wicked, 9 to 5 and The Boy From Oz veteran Stephanie J. Block, who has played Brice in regional productions, came in second, with 28% of votes.
Glee star Lea Michele (who performed Funny Girl's signature song "Don't Rain On My Parade" at this weekend's Tony Awards, as well as earlier in Glee's season) landed in third place with 22% of votes. Fourth place resulted in a tie between current Sondheim on Sondheim star Leslie Kritzer and reigning pop star Lady Gaga. (Brice wears elaborate costumes throughout the show, but who knows what kind of twist Gaga would bring to them?!) Kritzer and Gaga both receieve 5% of votes.
There's still plenty of time for speculation about casting, as the Broadway revival is nearly two years away. Thanks for voting!
