Initial casting has been announced for the Old Vic’s previously announced revival of Noel Coward’s provocative comedy Design for Living. The production will feature Broadway vet Andrew Scott (The Vertical Hour), Lisa Dillon and Tom Burke, directed by Anthony Page. Performances are set to begin at the London venue on September 3, with opening night scheduled for September 15.
Written in 1932 to star Lynn Fontanne, Alfred Lunt and Coward himself, Design for Living is a witty observation on the nature of relationships as three audacious young lovers flirt with fame and success and discover its price. From 1930s bohemian Paris to the dizzying heights of Manhattan society, Gilda (Dillon), a vivacious interior designer, leads playwright Leo (Scott) and artist Otto (Burke) on a merry dance of love, lust and betrayal. Pushed to a comical extreme, the only problem is that they love and lust after each other just too much.
In addition to Scott, Dillon and Burke, the cast will include Nancy Crane, Matthew Gammie, John Hollingworth, Maggie McCarthy, Maya Wasowicz and Angus Wright. Further casting is to be announced.
Design for Living will feature set design by Lez Brotherston, lighting by David Hersey and sound by Paul Groothuis. The play is produced by the Old Vic, Nica Burns, Max Weitzenhoffer and Jay Harris.
