Obie winner Eisa Davis (Passing Strange, This, Angela’s Mix Tape) and Audelco Award nominee Angela Lewis (Inked Baby, The Brother/Sister Plays, Hoodoo Love) are among the complete cast set for Playwrights Horizons’ forthcoming New York premiere of Kirsten Greenidge’s Milk Like Sugar. This joint production with Women’s Project and La Jolla Playhouse will begin performances on October 13 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater and open on November 1, continuing through November 20. Rebecca Taichman directs.
In addition to Davis and Lewis, the cast will include Cherise Booth (Ruined, King Hedley II), LeRoy McClain (Cymbeline, The History Boys), J. Mallory-McCree (Zooman and the Sign), Adrienne Moore (The 24 Hour Plays) and Nikiya Mathis in her New York debut.
Milk Like Sugar is described as a searing new play that finds humor and poetry in one inner-city girl’s struggle to carve out a life beyond the only one she knows. The play centers on 16-year-old Annie (Lewis), who has a choice: Honor the pregnancy pact she made with her friends, or find the path to a brighter future.
Before arriving at PH, the play will be presented at La Jolla Playhouse August 30-September 25 with Tony winner Tonya Pinkins in the role to be played in New York by Davis. The rest of the cast will play both La Jolla and off-Broadway.
Milk Like Sugar will feature scenic design by Mimi Lien, costume design by Miranda Hoffman, lighting design by Justin Townsend and sound design by Andre Pleuss.
In additional Playwrights Horizons casting news, Lucas Kavner has joined the cast of Itamar Moses’ Completeness, replacing the previously announced Michael Stahl-David, who withdrew from the production prior to the beginning of rehearsals due to a movie commitment. The play will begin previews on August 19 at Playwrights Horizons’ Mainstage Theater, opening on September 13 and playing through September 25, directed by Pam MacKinnon.
