Betty Blue Eyes, a musical adaptation of Alan Bennett and Malcolm Mowbray's film A Private Function, will close at the West End’s Novello Theatre on September 24, 2011. This latest West End offering of musical theater impresario Cameron Mackintosh (The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables) began performances on March 19, 2011, directed by Richard Eyre and starring Sarah Lancashire and Reece Shearsmith.
Betty Blue Eyes features a score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe and book by Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman. In the aftermath of WWII, England and its long-surviving citizens are seeking to rebuild. The country is staggering under the burden of acute rationing, unemployment, and the coldest winter for decades, and the only bright spark on the horizon is the impending royal wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
In addition to Lancashire and Shearsmith, Betty Blue Eyes also features David Bamber, Jack Edwards, Ann Emery, Mark Meadows and Adrian Scarborough. The creative team includes set designer Tim Hatley, lighting designer Neil Austin and sound designer Mick Potter.
