Theater vets Jim Parsons, Julianna Margulies, Peter Dinklage, Margo Martindale and Ty Burrell were among the winners at the 2011 Emmy Awards ceremony, held in Los Angeles on September 18. Modern Family took home five awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Burrell as best supporting actor.
Parsons, recently seen on Broadway in The Normal Heart, won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for The Big Bang Theory. Margulies, whose NYC theater credits including Festen and Ten Unknowns, won Best Actress in a Drama Series for The Good Wife. Dinklage, whose theater credits include the title role of Richard III at the Public Theater, and Martindale, a Tony nominee for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, took home Emmys for their supporting performances in Game of Thrones and Justified, respectively. (Fun fact: Burrell played the Duke of Buckingham opposite Dinklage in the Public's 2004 Shakespeare production.)
Tony Award winner Maggie Smith won a supporting actress Emmy for Downton Abbey, the British miniseries that won a total of four awards. In the drama categories, Emmys went to Mad Men for Outstanding Series, Friday Night Lights for Outstanding Writing and Boardwalk Empire’s Martin Scorsese for Outstanding Directing.
