Broadway theaters will dim their lights for one minute at 8PM on July 18 in the memory of Academy Award-winning actress Celeste Holm, who passed away in her home on July 15. She was 95.
Holm is best known for creating the role of Ado Annie in Oklahoma! on Broadway. After making her debut in Gloriana in 1938, Holm’s Broadway career spanned more than 50 years, until her final appearance in the 1991 production of Paul Rudnick’s I Hate Hamlet. In 1992, she was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. Onscreen, Holm won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Gentleman’s Agreement in 1947, and received two additional nominations for Come to the Stable and All About Eve. Her TV credits included Promised Land and Falcon Crest and the fairy godmother in the 1965 television adaptation of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.
“Celeste Holm’s impressive career on stage and screen spanned six decades, so multi-generations of theater and film fans had the chance to appreciate her unique talent,” Charlotte St. Martin, Executive Director of The Broadway League, said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with her friends and family at this time.”
