After The River, Hugh Jackman Wouldn't Mind Staying at Circle in the Square for Fun Home

Hugh Jackman may have just started preview performances in Jez Butterworth’s The River at the Circle in the Square Theatre, but the Tony winner already has his eyes on another role down the line. Fortunately, this new project wouldn’t even require him to change dressing rooms.

In an interview with The New York Times, the Tony winner revealed that he would consider being a replacement in the upcoming Broadway production of Fun Home, which is set to play the Circle in the Square beginning April 4, 2015, following The River’s final performance on January 25. Jackman refers to the role of Bruce Bechdel, a closeted gay father, as “an astonishing part.”

While casting for the Broadway production of the Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori musical has not been announced, Tony nominee Michael Cerveris played Bruce to critical acclaim in the Public Theater production in 2013. The Sam Gold-helmed production also starred Judy Kuhn and Sydney Lucas.

Jackman already has a history with the intimate Broadway space; the first Great White Way show he ever saw, the Al Pacino-led Hughie, was in the same house. But for now, that 104% full house is flocking to the theater to witness some fly fishing. Joining Jackman in The River are Laura Donnelly and Cush Jumbo in their Broadway debuts.
