In the Heights and Avenue Q Scenic Designer Anna Louizos Dies at 69

Anna Louizos, the prolific three-time Tony-nominated set designer has died. The news of her death was confirmed by a note on her personal website. She was 69.

Louizos was born on June 24, 1957 in Marysville, California. Beginning as an assistant and associate scenic designer, Louizos made a name for herselfwith her scenic design for the Tony-winning musicsl Avenue Q in 2003. She earned Tony nominations for her work on High Fidelity, In the Heights and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Her other Broadway credits included Golda’s Balcony, Steel Magnolias, Curtains, To Be Or Not To Be, White Christmas, All About Me, Baby It’s You!, The Performers, Cinderella, Honeymoon in Vegas, It Shoulda Been You, Dames at Sea, School of Rock and Holiday Inn.

In addition to scenic design, Louizos created the costumes for both All About Me and School of Rock on Broadway. “Something that starts off in my head with a few little scribbles on a paper ends up being fleshed out in steel, lights and fabric and it’s up there on stage," Louizos told Broadway.com in a 2015. "It’s pretty exciting to see it.”

Louizos earned an Emmy nomination for her work as the art director of the 47th Annual Tony Awards in 1993. She also served as an assistant on the 44th ceremony and the associate production designer for the 45th Tony Awards. Her other  television credit includes art direction for the final season of HBO's Sex and the City.

Louizos’ sole acting credit on screen was in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s tick, tick… BOOM! in 2021. She had designed the set for the 2001 off-Broadway production of Jonathan Larson's musical, which was co-produced by her wife, Robyn Goodman. Louizos and Goodman play the characters Michelle and Gay in the film.

She is survived by Goodman and her brother, Nikolas Louizos.
