Hip-hop star Mary J. Blige is not in negotiations to appear in the Broadway musical Brooklyn, despite a July 2 Variety report, which was picked up by Broadway.com. "The Variety article is incorrect," a production spokesperson told Broadway.com. "Mary J. Blige has been approached to record a song from Brooklyn and we have heard back that she is enthusiastic about it. Mary J. Blige will not be in Brooklyn."
Brooklyn, which features book, music and lyrics by Mark Schoenfeld and Barri McPherson, will start performances at the Plymouth Theatre on September 23 in preparation for an October 21 opening. The musical centers on a young girl from Paris Eden Espinosa whose search for the father she never knew lands her in America, in the city with the same name as her, Brooklyn.
Espinosa is the musical's only confirmed cast member. Further casting will be announced next week.
